There are big changes coming. Here are a few highlights:

A better web presence. We are working on a fully-integrated web page.

Online giving. You will be able to give to Hope & Healing online with your debit/credit card.

Blogging our story. You will be able to track with Dr. Randy Claassen, our medical director, and Hendrik Smidderks, our president as they work on developing the hospital.

A Tshwa-English dictionary. We have 3 people who have taken on the task of developing a Tshwa-English dictionary. This will be a long-term project to benefit staff and teams working at our hospital in Mozambique.

Funding. We are currently applying for grants and working to develop financial partners for the future. If you would like Hope & Healing to make a presentation to your church, organization, or charity, we would be happy to provide that service.

Team members Jim Blackburn, Dr. Randy Claassen, Hendrik Smidderks, and Rolf Hagemann met with the leadership of the Free Methodist Church of Mozambique, local officials, and the Minister of Health in Maputo. They were well received and able to make some progress on plans for 2014.

The team spent 3 days at Nhaloi meeting with staff and planning for the Claassen's move to the hospital. The local people have been very helpful and positive. Even the local police were asking about the next team! These relationships are crucial.

The Free Methodist Church of Mozambique appointed a chaplain to the hospital, Rev. Mateus Mawukwane, who speaks fluent English. He will be tremendously helpful to us in 2014. In addition to assisting 2014 teams, he will be teaching Dr. Randy & Janice Portuguese.

Team members were able to investigate buildings and supplies. There is plenty of reconstruction to do.

The electrical plant was repaired and is now ready for use. Rafael, an on-site volunteer, will be testing it this month.

We were unable to drill the new well. We were in contact with a well-driller from South Africa who was too busy in northern Mozambique to be of any assistance to us. We now have local officials working on another contractor. We are also looking at using a team from the Wesleyan Church who has a rig in Mozambique. Please continue to pray.

She was our OB nurse and we kept her busy. She did a terrific job with the complicated deliveries we handled.

Judy has been honored as one of the top 100 nurses in the state of Iowa. We know she is great, but it is wonderful for her to receive the public honor.
We have been very busy working on the next chapter of support for Nhaloi Medical Center. Here are some highlights:

We have incorporated "Hope and Healing Africa" and are applying for 501(c)3 status with the IRS. This will give us an avenue to seek corporate funding and grants.

Dr. Claassen & his family will be traveling to Mozambique in June to network with Ministry of Health and make more plans to take up residence ay Nhaloi. Hendrik Smidderks will be traveling with the Claassens for support and communication. Rolf Hagemann and 3D Outreach will again be a partner in this endeavor. More on this soon.

The water situation at Nhaloi remains critical. We have raised a fraction of the funds needed to repair the old well or drill a new well.

A women's group from a church in western Kansas is our first Nurse Sponsor. They are providing salary support for one of the nurses at Nhaloi. It only costs $30 a month!

We are seeking more financial support. If you are interested in sponsoring a nurse, helping with the water situation, or are willing to provide support for Dr. Claassen's return, please contact Hendrik at ezulween@gmail.comHendrikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16869051607779685966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4900773649929195564.post-60112460655868533482012-07-06T23:27:00.001-07:002012-07-06T23:27:09.489-07:00Into AfricaThe team landed in South Africa safe and sound. The team started their malaria medicine today. Two weeks from today our team will cross the South Africa/Mozambique border at Ressano Garcia and drive into the capital, Maputo.

Prayer Requests:
Medical Supplies - We are concerned about getting our medical supplies through all the border crossings without taxes, tariffs, or duty. Pray that officials allow us through without any hassles.

Visas - We are applying for Visas through the Mozambique embassy in Washington DC. Pray that this is a swift and smooth process.

Transportation - We have had a last minute change of plans on vehicles in South Africa. We cannot use a vehicle we were hoping to. Pray that one more vehicle can be found without stress or cost.

Thanks for keeping up with us. We will be posting regularly as the trip begins on July 2.Hendrikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16869051607779685966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4900773649929195564.post-2446872695590189882012-06-20T08:31:00.000-07:002012-06-20T08:31:18.604-07:00For those who are afraid of traveling to Mozambique
Here are a few notes of update and concern:

Travel Plans
Two vehicles are driving from Wichita to Chicago. One is going through Iowa to pick up Judy, one of the RN's. The other vehicle is driving through Springfield, IL, to pick up medical supplies and Jim, another RN. Two team members, Bill & Maria, will be flying to Chicago from their respective launch points. Pray that all arrive in Chicago on time and safe.

Border-crossing Concerns
Pray that we will be able to cross international borders without incident. We will be caring a significant supply of medical equipment that will be donated to the hospital. We need to be able to cross without tariffs or duty fees.

South African Drivers
We are blessed to be partnering with Rolf Hageman of 3D - Outreach . He and another man will be driving us from Johannesburg to Maputo and Nhaloi and back again. Rolf has been a tremendous blessing. His experience and availability have made him a valuable asset.

Medical Supplies
We are in the final stages of gathering medical supplies. There are a couple of items we are having difficulty obtaining, primarily medications. The next two weeks will include inventorying and creating manifests. Thanks to all who have contributed to the gathering of the supplies including doctors, nurses, hospitals, and individuals. You know who you are.

Personal Note
One of team members has a family member battling cancer. This is a difficult time to be gone. Please pray for health and strength.Hendrikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16869051607779685966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4900773649929195564.post-4033349810213012782012-06-09T13:13:00.001-07:002012-06-09T13:13:10.810-07:00

We are holding a Skype conference call on Thursday, April 26 at 7pm. Hendrik's Skype name is: hendrik.smidderks

See you on Skype!Hendrikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16869051607779685966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4900773649929195564.post-45818006715802325622012-03-27T20:48:00.001-07:002012-03-27T20:49:43.296-07:00Landmines and RatsIn a most bizarre story, the remaining landmines left after the civil war are being demined with the help of rats. Trained rats. I had to post this because I first thought it was a joke, but it is true!
Here is the link to the story.

By the way, we will not be in any areas with remaining landmines. When I traveled there in 1998 I met two Australians who were demining. They asked me right away where we would be working. They assured me that there were no mines left in the area around Nhaloi.Hendrikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16869051607779685966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4900773649929195564.post-37936557038822268292012-03-21T20:33:00.001-07:002012-03-21T20:33:27.791-07:00More on Medical SuppliesJim B. in Illinois put us in touch with a terrific charity that is prepared to help us with medical equipment. Today Jim, Hendrik, and a friend, Dave, toured their facility outside Springfield, Illinois. Most of the supplies we are wanting to take will be available through them at almost no cost. Stay tuned as we update our list. Team members be prepared to carry medical supplies in your luggage!Hendrikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16869051607779685966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4900773649929195564.post-22802693284319667782012-03-09T10:46:00.000-08:002012-03-09T10:46:24.837-08:00Map of NhaloiCLICK HERE to find Nhaloi Hospital on Google Maps
PitchI probably shouldn't use that turn of phrase with a medical team going to the tropics, but things are heating up, figuratively and literally.

We are in a push to purchase our airfare for the team. With the Summer Olympics in London in July and the strife with Iran driving up fuel costs, airline ticket prices are rising rapidly. We are going to plan on purchasing the tickets in the next week. This means we need to raise another $5000 - $6000 in the next week. Scary!

I was reminded this morning in reading scripture that God is able. If this team is to be successful, it will only be with His help.

This afternoon I made phone calls to try to open new contacts for funding. I am happy to say that the time was not wasted.

On another front, we are moving ahead with securing medical supplies. One piece of great news is that we have been promised a fetal dopplar. This piece of equipment is almost brand new. One of team members, Judy McQuown will be training the nurses at Nhaloi in it is use.

Two physicians in the Wichita area have expressed a desire to assist in the acquisition of other medical supplies. Jim in Illinois is also soliciting donations.
